The University College Birmingham reveal plans to create a canalside community in Birmingham “Cambrian Wharf”

The proposals set out by Associated Architects, Turley and Plincke include 1,207 student bed spaces, a net increase of 113 from its existing stock of student accommodation in the city. The new living facilities will sit within two blocks: a ‘Canalside Block’ at 34 storeys and a ‘Courtyard Block’ at 14 storeys. The buildings will be framed by new public realm and landscaping to reactivate the area into a new canalside community. The site is located on land north of Brindley Drive in Birmingham City Centre. It is currently occupied by an existing UCB student accommodation building known as Cambrain Halls, which was built in the 1970s.

The central location gives good transport links and amenities to support the students as they study and live in one of Britain’s most exciting and diverse cities. University College Birmingham is proposing to consolidate their student accommodation offer onto a single site at Cambrian Wharf.

While the redevelopment will deliver 1,207 student beds on the site, this will only represent an increase of 113 bed spaces in the city, as 247 currently delivered on site and The Maltings offering 847 bed spaces will close.

The redevelopment will allow the university to provide a modern student accommodation offer for their students in the heart of the city centre. Additionally, significant new public open space will reinvigorate an underused section of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, by introducing active frontages and new landscaping.
