Vyse Street Food Project Stage 1 - An Urban Transformation

Urban Design Hub have submitted plans for Phase 1 of Slow Food UK's Rooftop Urban Farm at the Vyse Street MSCP in the Jewellery Quarter to Birmingham City Council. Transforming a multi-storey car park into an urban rooftop farm and community garden. Based in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, this project is integral to improving and reducing the city’s carbon footprint whilst delivering quality, clean food to residents.

Working with Birmingham City Council (BCC) and Slow Food UK, we developed a strategy that addresses the need for food growth in cities. Through circular thinking and creative transferable design principles, we have transformed the Vyse Street car park into the city’s first sustainable hub.

Slow Food is an international organisation that is focused on improving food production to reduce carbon emissions and global warming. Amidst the ever-present challenges of climate change, Slow Food’s mission is to deliver ‘Good, Clean and Fair Food’ for all.

To support the Jewellery Quarter’s independent food retailers and its residents, we identified Vyse street’s multi-storey car park as an optimum location to build an urban farm that is easily accessible.

Created with communities in mind. We actively built relationships with local universities, businesses, and residents to understand their needs and how such a project would benefit their daily lives. This communication encouraged creativity. We designed a functional rooftop landscape plan, which includes a biodiversity centre, café, and a series of outwardly facing raised beds.

The rooftop farm and community garden compliment the surrounding infrastructure and does not impact on the existing substructure of the car park. This is a project that pioneers functional and sustainable synchronicity.
